Learnng & Teaching Moments

Through these "Learning and Teaching Moments" I hope to share a little of what we do at home educating our deaf daughter, a teaching or learning tip, and a short review of educational material. Diane and I would love your feedback on what you find useful and what you would like to see on this page....Felicia

As I was moving articles from the old Talking Fingers site to the new Talking Fingers site I came across some notes I had taken after attending the TAPED conference 2 years ago. You can check out that article by clicking here. I wanted to share with you some things we are doing at our home to create a reading friendly environment.

- We have discovered Post-It Sight Word Notes. These work great for the word wall idea mentioned in the article.
- We added Shelby to our phone plan so that she can have her own phone. Text messaging is her way of communicating with friends and family. It has helped with vocabulary, but we haven't seen any improvement in sentence structure yet.
- We read a Bible story at bedtime most nights. The book we use is The Child's Story Bible. Dad reads and I interpret. Shelby really likes this time.
- Starting at the age of 4 we give each child, on their birthday, an empty scrapbook. This book is used to store all the child's artwork during the year. Shelby now has 6 books. All my kids love this special book. It gives them the time to be creative, they can put things in chronological order, or show off what they have learned over the past year.
- Shelby loves to cook. She will look over the recipe and see what she can read. She can tell me how many eggs we need, etc.

There are many ways to create a reading environment at home. Experiment!

           Horsemanship Signs

                                       (Click Above)

Several people have asked for Signs they can use

for their horsemanship activities.

IP uses the signs included on the slide show.

Kaitlin Woodell is the young lady in the pics.

She teaches young riders basic horsemanship

using these signs as well as gestures, and added ASL  vocabulary.

Several of the deaf participants at Isaiah's Place helped construct the vocabulary.

Email IP and let us know if this helps!!
